வேற்றுக்கிரகமொன்றில் காபனீரொக்சைட் கண்டுபிடிப்பு.

நமது பூமியில் இருந்து 63 ஒளியாண்டுகளுக்கு அப்பால் இருக்கும் ஒரு நட்சத்திரத்தை நெருங்கிய ஒழுக்கில் சுற்றி வரும் எமது வியாழக்கிரக்கத்தின் திணிவை ஒத்த கிரகம் ஒன்றின் (HD 189733b )வளிமண்டத்தில் காபனீரொக்சைட் இருப்பது ஹபிள் விண் தொலைநோக்கியில் பொருத்தப்பட்டுள்ள Infrared Camera மற்றும் Multi-Object Spectrometer (NICMOS) கொண்டு நடத்தப்பட்ட ஆய்வில் இருந்து கண்டறியப்பட்டுள்ளது.

காபன் அடிப்படை உயிரினங்கள் ஒரு கிரகத்தில் இருப்பதற்கான அல்லது இருந்ததற்கான சான்றாக காபனீரொக்சைட், நீர், மெதேன் மற்றும் ஒக்சிசன் வாயுவின் இருப்பு கொள்ளப்படக் கூடியதாக இருப்பினும் மேற்குறிப்பிட்ட கிரகம் அதன் நட்சத்திரத்தை நெருங்கிச் சுற்றிக் கொண்டிருப்பதால் அதன் மேற்பரப்பு வெப்பநிலை மிக அதிகமாக இருப்பதால் அங்கு உயிரினங்கள் வாழ ஏதுவான சூழல் நிலவியிருக்குமா என்பது பற்றி ஆராய்வதில் விஞ்ஞானிகள் தற்போது கவனம் செலுத்தி வருகின்றனர்.

சூரியக் குடும்பத்துக்கு வெளியே நீர் மற்றும் மெதேன் கொண்ட கிரகங்கள் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்ட நிலையில் தற்போது காபனீரொக்சைட் கொண்ட கிரகமும் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளமை முக்கியமான ஒன்றாக கருதப்படுகிறது. இன்னும் ஒக்சிசன் உள்ள கிரகம் கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட வேண்டிய நிலை தொடர்கிறது என்பது இங்கு குறிப்பிடத்தக்க அம்சமாகும்.

சந்திரயான் விண்கலனில் வெப்ப உயர்வு.

நிலவை ஆராய இந்தியா அனுப்பிய முதல் ஆளில்லா விண்கலமான சந்திரயான் 1 கலத்தில் வெப்பநிலை அதிகரித்துள்ளதால் பிரச்சனைகள் ஏற்பட்டுள்ளன. கலனுக்குள் அதிகரிக்கும் வெப்பநிலையைக் குறைக்க விண்வெளி விஞ்ஞானிகள் பல்வேறு முயற்சிகளை முன்னெடுத்து வருகின்றனர்.

நிலவை ஆராய கடந்த அக்டோபர் மாதம் 22 ஆம் திகதி இந்தியா சந்திரயான் 1 விண்கலனை ஏவியது. இந்தக் கலன் திட்டமிட்டபடி நிலவு வட்டப் பாதையை இம்மாத துவக்கத்தில் அடைந்தது. பிறகு நிலவின் தரைப் பகுதி மீது சில உபகரணங்கள் அடங்கிய துணைக் கலனையும் வெற்றிகரமாக செலுத்தியது. மேலும் நிலவின் மேல் பரப்பையும், பூமியையும் படம் பிடித்து அனுப்பியுள்ளது.

ஆனால் திடிரென, சந்திரயான் கலனின் உள்ளே வெப்பநிலை வேகமாக உயர்ந்தது கண்டறியப்பட்டது. கலனுக்குள் வெப்பநிலை 50 டிகிரியைத் தொட்டதன் காரணமாக, செயற்கைக் கோளில் உள்ள கணினிகள் உள்ளிட்ட முக்கிய சாதனங்கள் தற்காலிகமாக செயல் நிறுத்தம் செய்யப்பட்டதாக திட்ட இயக்குனர் அண்ணாதுரை தமிழோசையிடம் தெரிவித்தார். இதன் காரணமாக கலனில் நிலவும் வெப்ப நிலை தற்போது 40 டிகிரி அளவுக்கு குறைக்கப்பட்டதாக அவர் தெரிவித்தார்.

சந்திரனில் தற்போது கோடைக் காலம் என்பதால், சந்திரயான் விண்கலம், சந்திரன் மற்றும் சூரியன் ஆகிய மூன்றும் ஒரே நேர்கோட்டில் இருப்பதால் கலனின் வெளிப்புறத்தில் கடும் வெப்பம் ஏற்படுவதாகவும் அண்ணாதுரை தெரிவித்தார்.

கலனுக்குள்ளே வெப்பத்தைக் குறைப்பதற்கான நடவடிக்கைகளின் ஒரு பகுதியாக, சந்திரயான் விண்கலன் சந்திரனில் இருந்து 20 டிகிரி அளவுக்கு விலகி சாய்ந்து செல்லுமாறு தற்போது ஏற்பாடு செய்யப்பட்டுள்ளதாகவும், வெப்ப நிலை குறையாத பட்சத்தில், சந்திரயான் கலத்தின் வட்டப் பாதையை உயர்த்துவது குறித்தும் முடிவு செய்யப்படும் என்றும் அவர் தெரிவித்தார்.

செப்டம்பர் 10 ஆம் நாள் பெய்ஜிங் நேரப்படி பிற்பகல் 3.35 மணிக்கு உலகின் பிக் பேங் எனப்படும் மிகப் பெரிய வெடிப்பு இயற்பியல் பரிசோதனை பிரான்ஸ் சுவிட்சர்லாந்து எல்லையில் வெற்றிகரமாக நடைபெற்றுள்ளது. உலகளவில் மிகவும் எதிர்பார்ப்பையும் கவலையையும் ஏற்படுத்தியுள்ள இந்த அறிவியல் ஆய்வின் விபரங்களை அறிய தருகிறோம்.

இதனை அறிவியல் ரீதியாக உறுதிபடுத்தும் விதமாக இந்த கடவுள் துகளை செயற்கையாக உருவாக்க நடைபெறும் முயற்சி தான் தற்போது நடைபெறும் இயற்பியல் பரிசோதனை. அவ்வாறு கண்டுபிடிக்கப்பட்டால் உலகு மற்றும் விண்வெளி மண்டலம் தோன்றியது பற்றிய பல்வேறு அறியா புதிர்களுக்கு பதில் தெளிவாகும் என்று எண்ணப்படுகிறது. இம்முயற்சியின் முதல் கட்ட பரிசோதனை செப்டம்பர் 10 ஆம் நாள் தொடங்கியுள்ளது. கடந்த 30 ஆண்டுகளாக இத்திட்டப் பணியின் முயற்சிகளை அறிவியலாளர்கள் மேற்கொண்டாலும், 2003 ஆம் ஆண்டு தான் அதன் கட்டுமானப்பணி தொடங்கியது. உலகின் மிகப் பெரிய அறிவியல் பரிசோதனையான இதனை சுவிட்சர்லாந்து பிரான்ஸ் எல்லையருகே அமைத்தனர். 27 மீட்டர் நீளமுடைய மிக பெரிய ஹாட்ரன் மோதல் கருவியை பூமியின் ஏறக்குறைய 300 அடி ஆழத்திலான சுரங்கத்தில் அமைத்தனர். அதாவது இந்த கருவி புரோட்டான்களின் வேகத்தை அதிகரிக்க செய்வதோடு, அவை எதிரெதிராக வரும்போது மோத செய்வதால் ஹாட்ரன் மோதல் கருவி என்கிறோம். 900 கோடி அமெரிக்க டாலர் செலவிலான இத்திட்டப்பணி 20 ஐரோப்பிய ஒன்றிய உறுப்பு நாடுகளால் ஒருங்கிணைக்கப்பட்டு,. 80 நாடுகளிலுள்ள அறிவியலாளர்களை இப்பரிசோதனை திட்டம் ஈர்த்துள்ளது. 1200 அறிவியலாளர்களை ஈடுபடுத்தியுள்ள பார்வையாளர் நாடாக பங்கேற்றுள்ள அமெரிக்கா 531 மில்லியன் டாலர்களை இதற்காக வழங்கியுள்ளது. ஜப்பான் இன்னொரு பார்வையாளரும் அதிக தொகை வழங்கிய நாடாக உள்ளது.

நண்பர் ஒருவருடன் பேசிக் கொண்டிருக்கிறீர்கள். திடீரென நெஞ்சைப் பொத்திக் கொண்டு துடிக்கிறார். அவருக்கு ஏற்கனவே இருதய வருத்தம் இருப்பது உங்களுக்குத் தெரியும். இது மாரடைப்பு என்பது புரிகிறது. அம்பியூலன்சைக் கூப்பிடுவதற்கு முன்னரே சரிந்து விடுகிறார். முதல் உதவிச் சிகிச்சையில் பரிச்சியம் உள்ள நீங்கள் அவரின் நாடித் துடிப்பைப் பார்க்கிறீர்கள், அது நின்று விட்டது. மூக்கில் கை வைத்துப் பார்க்கிறீர்கள், சுவாசமும் நின்று விட்டது. அவசர அவசரமாக இருதய மசாஜ் செய்து செயற்கை சுவாசமும் கொடுக்கிறீர்கள். பிரயோசனமில்லை. வைத்தியசாலைக்கு எடுத்துச் சென்றபோது ஏற்கனவே மரணித்து விட்டதாக கூறுகிறார்கள்.

Univesity of Pennsylvanவைச் சார்ந்த Dr. Lance Becker ஒரு பிரேதப் பரிசோதனை செய்து கொண்டிருந்த போதுதான் அந்த ஆச்சரியமூட்டும் உண்மை வெளிப்பட்டது. மரணித்து ஒரு
மணித்தியாலயத்திற்கு மேற் சென்று விட்ட போதும் அந்த மனிதனது (அல்லது சடலமா?) கலங்கள் இறந்து விட்டதற்கான எந்த அறிகுறிகளும் தெரியவில்லை. வியப்படைந்த அவர் தனது பரிசோதனையைத் தொடர்நத போது மேலும் சில மணிநேரத்திற்குப் பின்னரும் கலங்கள் உயிரோடு இருப்பது தெரியவந்தது.

இறந்து சில மணி நேரங்களுக்குப் பின்னரும் கலங்கள் உயிரோடு இருந்த போதும் வைத்தியர்களால் ஏன் அவனைக் காப்பாற்ற முடியவில்லை என்ற கேள்வி உங்கள் மனதில் எழுந்திருக்கும். 5 நிமிடங்கள் பிராண வாயு இல்லாதிருந்தால், அக் கலங்களுக்கு பிற்பாடு பிராண வாயு கிடைத்த போதும் அவை இறப்பதைத் தடுக்க முடிவதில்லை. அது தான் உண்மை. ஆனால் ஏன்?

இதற்கு விடை கிடைத்தால் உங்கள் கேள்விக்கும் விடை கிடைத்து விடும். இறந்தவர்களுக்கு சிகிச்சையளிக்கப் போகும் முயற்சி ஆராய்ச்சியாக ஏற்கனவே ஆரம்பித்து விட்டது.

ஆராய்ச்சியானது கலங்களின் உள்ளே உள்ள சிறிய துணிக்கைகளுக்கு இட்டுச் செல்கின்றன. மிட்டோகொன்ரியா (Mitochondria) எனும் அவைதான் கலங்களுக்குத் தேவையான சக்தியை, ஒட்சி ஏற்றம் மூலம் உற்பத்தி செய்கின்றன. இது இன்னுமொரு வித்தியாசமான கடமையையும் செய்கிறது. வழமைக்கு மாறான கலங்களை (உதா புற்றுநோய்க் கலங்கள்) நெறிப்படுத்தப்பட்ட முறையில் மரணிக்கச் செய்கின்றன. இது புற்றுநோய்க்கு எதிரான உடலின் பாதுகாப்பு திட்டம் போலச் செயற்படுகிறது. எனவே 5 நிமிடங்களுக்குப் பின்னர் திடீரென ஒட்சிசன் கொடுக்கும் போது அக் கலங்களுக்கும் புற்றுநோய்க் கலங்களுக்கும் இடையே வேறுபாட்டை உணர முடியாமல் மரணிக்கச் செய்கின்றனவோ என எண்ணுகிறார்கள்.

ஆனால் அவசர சிகிச்சைப் பிரிவில் நாம் செய்வது என்ன? இருதயம் நின்று விட்ட ஒருவரை 10-15 நிமிடங்களுக்கு பின்னர் கொண்டு வந்து சேர்க்க முடிகிறது. உடனே இருதயத்தைத் துடிக்க வைக்க மருந்துகள் கொடுப்பதுடன் பிராண வாயுவையும் பம்ப் செய்கிறோம். இரத்த ஓட்டம் இல்லாததால் பட்டினி கிடந்த இருதயக் கலங்களை பிராண வாயுவில் மூழ்கடிக்கிறோம். இது அவற்றின் மரணத்தில் முடிகிறது.

இதற்கு மாறாக மாற்று முறையில் சிகிச்சை செய்தபோது முடிவுகள் சாதகமாக இருந்தன. அதாவது இருதயக் கலங்களை பிராண வாயுவில் மூழ்கடிக்காமல் அப்படியே விட்டுவிட்டு உடலுக்கான இரத்த ஓட்டத்தை செயற்கையாக heart-lung bypass machine மூலம் கொடுத்துக் கொண்டு இருதயத்தை துடிக்க வைத்தார்கள். 80 சத விகிதமானவர்களைக் காப்பாற்ற முடிந்தது.

அத்துடன் குருதியின் வெப்பத்தை 37 இலிருந்து 33 டிகிரி செல்சியஸ்க்கு குறைப்பதன் மூலம், பிராண வாயுவால் மூழ்கடிக்கும் போது கலங்களுக்கு ஏற்படும் இரசாயன மாற்றங்களை குறைக்க முடியும் என்றும் கண்டறிந்திருக்கிறார்கள். இதை வெளியிடங்களிலும் செயற்படுத்தக் கூடியதாக உப்பும் ஜசும் சேர்ந்த ஒரு வித கலவையை ஊசி மூலம் ஏற்றும் முறையையும் கண்டு பிடித்திருக்கிறார்கள்.

இவற்றை கடைப்பிடித்தால் மரணித்தவருக்கும் சிகிச்சை செய்து 'உயிர்ப்பிக்க' முடியும். ஆராச்சிகள் தொடர்கின்றன. அது நாளாந்த செயற்பாட்டிற்கு வந்து, அதுவும் எங்கள் நாட்டிற்கு வந்து சேரும் வரை மாரடைப்பு வராதிருக்க பிரார்திப்போமாக.

நிலவில் இன்று தடம் பதிக்கிறது மூவர்ணக்கொடி

சென்னை : சந்திரயான்-1 செயற்கைக்கோளில் உள்ள எம்.ஐ.பி., கருவி, இன்றிரவு நிலவின் மேற்பரப்பில் மோதி இறங்கவுள்ளது. இதன் மூலம் இந்திய மூவர்ணக்கொடி, முதல் முறையாக நிலவின் மேற்பரப்பில் தடம் பதிக்கவுள்ளது. இந்தியா நிலவுக்கு அனுப்பிய முதலாவது செயற்கைக்கோளான சந்திரயான், தனது இறுதி சுற்றுப்பாதையான நிலவிலிருந்து 100 கி.மீ., தொலைவில் தற்போது சுற்றி வருகிறது. சந்திரயானில் மொத்தம் 11 ஆராய்ச்சி கருவிகள் உள்ளன. இவற்றில் ஒன்றான 29 கிலோ எடை கொண்ட எம்.ஐ.பி., (மூன் இம்பாக்ட் புரோப்) கருவி, சந்திரயானில் இருந்து இன்று இரவு 8 மணிக்கு கழற்றி விடப்படவுள்ளது.


சந்திரயான் திட்ட இயக்குனர் அண்ணாதுரை கூறியதாவது: எம்.ஐ.பி., கருவியை பிரித்து விடுவதற்கான உத்தரவு, பெங்களூருவில் உள்ள, "இந்தியன் டீப் சயின்ஸ் நெட்வொர்க்' மையத்திலிருந்து இன்று இரவு 8 மணிக்கு பிறப்பிக்கப்படும். எம்.ஐ.பி., கருவியில் உள்ள இன்ஜின் இயக்கப்பட்டு, சந்திரயானில் இருந்து நிலவை நோக்கி செலுத்தப்படும். இதையடுத்து, எம்.ஐ.பி., கருவி பிரிந்து, நிலவை நோக்கி பயணிக்கும். 25வது நிமிடத்தில் எம்.ஐ.பி., கருவி நிலவில் மோதி இறங்கும். இக்கருவியிலிருந்து பெறப்படும் புகைப்படங்கள், வரும் 16ம் தேதி நமக்கு கிடைக்கும். இவ்வாறு அண்ணாதுரை தெரிவித்தார். எம்.ஐ.பி., கருவியின் நான்கு புறங்களிலும் இந்திய மூவர்ணக்கொடி பொறிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது. இதன் மூலம் இந்திய மூவர்ணக்கொடி முதல் முறையாக நிலவின் மேற்பரப்பில் தடம் பதிக்கவுள்ளது. அமெரிக்கா, ரஷ்யா, ஜப்பான் ஆகிய நாடுகளுக்கு அடுத்தபடியாக, நிலவின் மேற்பரப்பில் தனது நாட்டுக் கொடியை இடம் பெறச் செய்த நான்காவது நாடு என்ற பெருமையை இந்தியா நாளை பெறவுள்ளது.

விற்றமின் B12 ம் வயதானவர்களின் மூளை சுருங்குதலும்

“ஒரு விற்றமின் B12 ஊசி அடித்துவிடுங்கோ” இவ்வாறு கேட்டு வருபவர்கள் சிலர் இருக்கிறார்கள்.

ஒரு சிலருக்கு இது உண்மையான மருத்துவத் தேவையாக இருந்த போதும் பலருக்கு அது தேநீர் குடிப்பது போல ஒரு பழக்கமோ என நான் எண்ணுவதுண்டு.

“ஒரு தேத்தண்ணி குடிச்சால்தான் உசார் வரும்” என்பது போல ஒரு ஊசி அடித்தால்தான் அவர்களுக்கு மனம் சார்ந்த உற்சாகம் வருவதுண்டு.

விற்றமின் B12 குறைபாடுதான் காரணம் எனச் சொல்ல முடியாததற்கு ஆதாரம் இதுதான்.

107 வயதானவர்களைக் கொண்டு செய்யப்பட்ட ஆய்வு இது. அதன்போது ஆரம்பத்திலும் வருடாவருடமும் அவர்களுக்கு வழமையான மருத்துவப் பரிசோதனை, இரத்தப் பரிசோதனை, அவர்களின் அறிவார்ந்த செயற்பாடுகள் பற்றிய மதிப்பீடு, முளையின் பொருன்மிய நிலையை அறிய MRI பரிசோதனை ஆகியன செய்யப்பட்டன.

அவர்கள் எவரது இரத்தத்திலும் B12 ன் அளவானது வழமையாக எதிர்பார்க்கப்படும் சாதாரணத்தை விடக் குறைவாக இருக்கவில்லை. அதாவது அவர்களுக்கு இரத்தத்தில் டீ12 குறைபாடு இருக்கவில்லை. ஆயினும் ஆய்வின் முடிவில், சாதாரண அளவானதின் குறைந்த நிலையில் B12 இருந்தவர்களது மூளையின் பருமனானது சாதாரண அளவானதின் உயர்ந்த மட்டத்தில் இருந்தவர்களை விட 6 மடங்கு அதிகமாகக் குறைந்திருந்தது.

இதன் அர்த்தம் என்ன?

நாம் வழமையாக எதிர்பாரக்கும் அளவை விட அதிகமான செறிவில் இரத்த B12 இருந்தால் முதுமையில் மூளை சுருங்குவது குறைவு என்பதாகும். எனவே எமது உணவில் B12 அதிகமுள்ள உணவுகளைச் சேர்த்துக் கொள்வது நல்லது. முதியவர்களுக்கு இது மேலும் முக்கியமாகும். இறைச்சி, மீன், பால் ஆகியவற்றை உணவில் சேர்த்துக் கொள்வது அவசியம்.

தாவர உணவுகளில் விற்றமின் B12 இல்லாததால் தாவர உணவு மட்டும் உண்போர் விற்றமின் B12குறைபாட்டிற்கு ஆளாவதற்கான சாத்தியங்கள் அதிகம். பாலூட்டும் தாய்மார், பாலகர்கள், மற்றும் முதியவர்களுக்கு இவ்விற்றமின் குறைபாடு ஏற்படுவதற்கான சாத்தியம் அதிகமாகும்.

விற்றமின் குறைபாட்டை குணமாக்குவதற்கு விற்றமின் B12 ஊசியாகப் போடுவதே ஒரு வழி. ஆயினும் மூளை சுருங்குவதைத் தடுப்பதற்கு ஊசி தேவையில்லை. ஏனெனில் அவர்களுக்கு B12 குறைபாடு இருக்கவில்லை.

குடல் தொடர்பான புற்றுநோய்க்கு இட்டு செல்லுகின்ற திசுக்களில் 18 மாற்றங்களையும், புற்றுநோயாளிகளின் இதர பகுதிகளிலான சாதாரண திசுக்களின் மரபணுக்களை விட தெளிவான வேதியல் மாற்றங்களையும் மரபணுக்களில் கண்டதாகவும் இந்த ஆய்வை நடத்திய பேராசிரியர் ஐயன் ஜாண்சன் குறிப்பிட்டார். பெருங்குடல் புற்றுநோயாளிகளின் வயிற்று பகுதியிலான உயிரணுக்கள், உயிரணு மூலக்கூறுகளை வழக்கத்திற்கு மாறாக பெற்றிருந்ததை ஆய்வில் கண்டறிந்தனர். இவ்வாறு உயிரணுக்களில் ஏற்படும் வேதியல் மாற்றங்களை தெரிந்து கொள்வதன் மூலம் வருங்காலத்தில் புற்றுநோய்க்கு இட்டுசெல்லும் திசுக்களை இனம்கண்டு அந்நோய் வருவதை தடுக்கும் முறையை கண்டறிந்துள்ளனர்.

NASA says Phoenix lander's arm delayed to move

WASHINGTON, May 27 -- U.S. Phoenix lander's arm movement and other activities scheduled on its second day on Mars are delayed because NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter flying over mars failed to relay commands from the Earth, the U.S. space agency reported Tuesday.

NASA engineers sent commands for moving the lander's robotic arm on Tuesday morning, to the orbiter for relay to Phoenix. However, the orbiter did not relay those commands to the lander due to a glitch, said NASA's mission updates.

Now, the Phoenix team has decided to delay the arm movement into Wednesday. It will try to move its crucial arm, unlatch its wrist and then flex its elbow for the first time after the successful landing on Sunday.

The Mars orbiter's communication-relay system is in a standby mode. NASA's another orbiter, Mars Odyssey, is available for relaying communications between Earth and Phoenix.

Mission scientists are eager to move Phoenix's arm, for that arm will deliver samples of icy terrain to their instruments made to study this unexplored Martian environment.

During the next three months, the arm will dig into soil near the lander and deliver samples of soil and ice to laboratory instruments on the lander deck.

NASA Mars Lander Prepares To Move Arm

Mission scientists are eager to move Phoenix's robotic arm, for that arm will deliver samples of icy terrain to their instruments made to study this unexplored Martian environment.

The team sent commands for moving the arm on Tuesday morning, May 27, to NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter for relay to Phoenix. However, the orbiter did not relay those commands to the lander, so arm movement and other activities are now planned for Wednesday. The orbiter's communication-relay system is in a standby mode. NASA's Mars Odyssey orbiter is available for relaying communications between Earth and Phoenix.

NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter did send back spectacular first images of the landed Phoenix from orbit, views from the Phoenix lander of where it will work for the next three months, and a preliminary weather report.

A newly processed image from the high-resolution camera known as HiRISE on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter shows a full-resolution view of the Phoenix parachute and lander during its May 25 descent, with Heimdall crater in the background.

"Phoenix appears to be descending into the 10 kilometer, or 6-mile, crater, but is actually 20 kilometers, or about 12 miles, in front of the crater," said HiRISE principal investigator Alfred S. McEwen of the University of Arizona, Tucson.

HiRISE has taken a new color image of Phoenix on the ground about 22 hours after it landed. It shows the parachute attached to the back shell, the heat shield and the lander itself against red Mars. The parachute and lander are about 300 meters, roughly 1,000 feet, apart.

Commands to be sent to the lander Wednesday morning include taking more pictures of the surroundings and making the first movements of the mission's crucial robotic arm.

A covering that had shielded the arm from microbes during its last few months before launch had not fully retracted on landing day, May 25, but it moved farther from the arm during the following day.

"The biobarrier had relaxed more and allows more clearance, but it was not a major concern either way," said Fuk Li, manager of the Mars Exploration Program at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif.

During the next three months, the arm will dig into soil near the lander and deliver samples of soil and ice to laboratory instruments on the lander deck. Following today's commands, its movements will begin with unlatching the wrist, then moving the arm upwards in a stair-step manner.

Phoenix principal investigator Peter Smith of the University of Arizona was delighted with new images of the workspace. "The workspace is ideal for us because it looks very diggable. We're very happy to see just a few rocks scattered in the digging area."

The Phoenix weather station, provided by the Canadian Space Agency, was activated within the first hour after landing on Mars, and measurements are now being recorded continuously. The data from the first 18 hours after landing have been transmitted back to the science team, and they have provided a weather report. The temperature ranged between a minimum of minus 80 degrees Celsius (minus 112 degrees Fahrenheit) in the early morning and a maximum of minus 30 degrees Celsius (minus 22 degrees Fahrenheit) in the afternoon. The average pressure was 8.55 millibars, which is less than a hundredth of the sea level pressure on Earth. The wind speed was 20 kilometers per hour (13 miles per hour), out of the northeast. The skies were clear. More instruments will be activated over the coming days, and the weather report will expand to include measurements of humidity and visibility.

Smith presented a new Surface Stereo Imager view of the American flag and a mini-DVD on the Phoenix's deck, about three feet above the Martian surface. The mini-DVD from the Planetary Society contains a message to future Martian explorers, science fiction stories and art inspired by the Red Planet, and the names of more than a quarter million Earthlings.

The Phoenix mission is led by Smith at the University of Arizona with project management at JPL and development partnership at Lockheed Martin. உலகின் மிகப் பெரும் சொகுசுக் கப்பல்களில் ஒன்று டைட்டானிக். 1912ம் ஆண்டு ஏப்ரல் 14ம் தேதி இரவில் அது கடலில் சென்று கொண்டிருந்தபோது பெரும் பனிப்பாறை மீது மோதியது. இதில் கப்பல் உடைந்து, கடல் நீர் உள்ளே புகுந்து அதில் இருந்த 1,500 பேரும் ஜல சமாதியானார்கள்.

இந்த சம்பவம் நடந்து 96 ஆண்டுகள் விட்டது. இதுகுறித்து படமும் வந்து விட்டது. டைட்டானிக் கப்பல் மூழ்கியது குறித்து நீண்ட காலமாகவே பல்வேறு ஆய்வுகள் நடந்து வருகின்றன. அப்படிப்பட்ட ஒரு லேட்டஸ்ட் ஆய்வில், கப்பலில் பொருத்தப்பட்டிருந்த ரிவிட்டுகள் சரியில்லாததால்தான் கப்பல் உடைந்ததற்கு முக்கிய காரணம் எனத் தெரிவிக்கப்பட்டுள்ளது.

இதுகுறித்து அமெரிக்காவைச் சேர்ந்த விஞ்ஞானிகள் குழு ஒன்று ஆய்வு மேற்கொண்டு அதன் முடிவுகளை வெளியிட்டுள்ளது.

ஒவ்வொரு பெரிய கப்பலும் கட்டப்படும்போது குறைந்தது 30 லட்சம் ரிவிட்டுகள் தேவைப்படும். இதுதான் கப்பலின் பலத்தை உறுதி செய்கிறது.

டைட்டானிக் கப்பலைக் கட்டியவர்கள், தரமான ரிவிட்டுகள் கிடைக்காமல் பல காலமாக அவதிப்பட்டு வந்துள்ளனர். மேலும் ரிவிட்டுகளை சரியாக பொருத்தும் நிபுணர்களும் அவர்களுக்குக் கிடைக்கவில்லை. இதனால்தான் தரமற்ற ரிவிட்டுக்களை வைத்து கப்பலைக் கட்டியுள்ளனர். இதுதான் கப்பலின் சேதத்திற்குக் காரணமாகி விட்டது.

இதற்கு ஆதாரமாக கப்பலைக் கட்டிய நிறுவனம் வைத்துள்ள ஆவணங்களிலேயே போதுமான தகவல்கள் உள்ளன. தரமற்ற ரிவிட்டுக்களை டைட்டானிக் கப்பலைக் கட்டிய நிறுவனம் நாட முக்கிய காரணம், அதேசமயத்தில் டைட்டானிக் தவிர ஒலிம்பிக் மற்றும் பிரிட்டானிக் என இரு பெரும் கப்பல்களையும் அவர்கள் கட்டித் தர வேண்டியிருந்தது.

இரும்பு ரிவிட்டுக்களுக்குப் பற்றாக்குறை நிலவியதால் அதற்குப் பதில் ஸ்டீல் ரிவிட்டுக்களைப் பயன்படுத்த தீர்மானிக்கப்பட்டது. இரும்பை விட ஸ்டீல் ரிவிட்டுகள் பலமானவை, உறுதியானவை.

இதையடுத்து கப்பலின் மையப் பகுதியில், ஸ்டீல் ரிவிட்டுக்களைப் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளனர். ஆனால் கப்பலின் அடிப்பாகத்திலும், பிற பகுதிகளிலும் இரும்பு ரிவிட்டுக்களைப் பயன்படுத்தியுள்ளனர்.

ATV Jules Verne Docks with Station

The Jules Verne, the first European Space Agency Automated Transfer Vehicle, docked to the aft port of the International Space Station's Zvezda Service Module at 10:45 a.m. EDT Thursday.

The unpiloted cargo spacecraft carries more than 7,500 pounds of equipment, supplies, water, fuel and gases for the station.

It also carries hopes and aspirations of the European Space Agency. The ATV and its advanced rendezvous system could play an important role in future space exploration.

The Jules Verne docked smoothly using its automated, laser guided rendezvous system. It was in many respects a repeat of the dry run on Monday. That practice approach brought the ATV to within 36 feet of the docking port.

The Jules Verne launched from Kourou, French Guiana, on an Ariane 5 rocket on March 9.

Solar arrays deployed as planned after two engine firings more than an hour and a half after launch. That placed the ATV in a parking orbit about 1,200 miles from the station.

It was, at almost 22 tons, the largest payload ever launched by the Ariane 5.

The Jules Verne is named after the acclaimed French science-fiction author. It is the first of perhaps seven such spacecraft to be built.

The ATV can carry about three times the cargo weight carried by the Progress, the reliable Russian unpiloted cargo carrier.

The Jules Verne initially was placed in an orbit a safe distance from the station, where a series of tests were performed. Among the last of the tests were two approaches to the station.

Those approaches ended in "escape" maneuvers, to verify a collision avoidance system. It would be used if the ATV automated docking system should fail.

The spacecraft is scheduled to remain at the station until August, for unloading and to reboost the orbiting laboratory. Subsequently it will be filled with station garbage and discards. Then it will be deorbited for destruction on re-entry over the Pacific.

Samsung Unveils Advanced Digital Cameras And Camcorders

Samsung India announces the launch of its new, advanced 2008 series of Digital Still Cameras and Camcorders. The company announced the launch of its advanced ‘NV’ series, ‘I series’, ‘L series’ and ‘S series’ of Digital Still Cameras.

R Zutshi, Dy MD, Samsung India, states that “Keeping with the changing consumer preferences, the new 2008 series of Samsung Digital Still Cameras comprises of Digital cameras with resolutions of 7,8 and 10 mega pixels, larger sized LCDs and sleek form factor. We have introduced colour options across our different models as well”.

Xerox WorkCentre 5020, An A3 Mono Multi-Functional Product Launched

Xerox India announced the launch of Xerox WorkCentre 5020, an A3 mono multi-functional product that can print, copy and scan. The newly launched Xerox WorkCentre 5020 is targeted at the SME segment and will be offered at a price point of INR 75,000.

Xerox WorkCentre 5020 has been bundled with features including “ID Card Copy” that allows copying of both sides of an ID or small document on to one side of a sheet of paper saving both time and paper. In addition, there is a “Poster” feature that enables a user to print a single-page document onto 9 sheets of paper, which can be linked together to form one poster-size document

Mozilla Unleashes Firefox 3 Beta 4

Mozilla accelerated towards the final of Firefox 3 by posting the fourth beta for download and immediately confirming that it would give developers just a week before it froze the code on the next.

Mike Beltzner, Mozilla's interface designer, touted several improvements that debuted in Beta 4, including full-page zoom, offline data storage for Web apps and a revamped download manager. The browser's performance has also been boosted, said Beltzner and more of its irksome memory leaks have been plugged.

"Changes to our JavaScript engine as well as profile-guided optimization resulted in significant gains over previous releases in the popular SunSpider test from Apple," said Beltzner in a post to the Mozilla developer centers. "Web applications like Google [ Gmail ] and Zoho Office run much faster, and continued improvements to memory usage drastically reduce the amount of memory consumed over long browsing sessions."

Reducing Firefox's memory consumption has become one of the hallmarks of Version 3's development. The browser, which has been blasted for tying up increasing amounts of memory the longer it's open, now uses an automated cycle collector to free any unused memory and a new allocator to reduce memory fragmentation. Mozilla has estimated that it's plugged "hundreds" of leaks so far.

Updated release notes boasted that Beta 4 contains more than 900 enhancements since the mid-February Beta 3, including very visible changes to the browser's look and feel. It is now more in line with the appearance of native applications on the various operating systems on which it runs, said Mozilla. But as the open-source developer unveiled the newest beta, it also confirmed that it would freeze code for the next build, Beta 5, on March 18. Last week, Mozilla's executives, including Mike Schroepfer, the company's chief engineer, decided that there were too many bugs remaining in Beta 4 to move from it to release candidate stage, and announced that a fifth preview would be necessary.

Firefox 3 Beta 4 can be downloaded for Windows, Mac OS X and Linux in 36 languages from Mozilla's site. However, as he has done in the past, Beltzner again warned casual users to steer clear. "We do not recommend that anyone other than developers and testers download the Firefox 3 Beta 4 milestone release," he said. "It is intended for testing purposes only."

To some extent, Beltzner's advice has gone unheeded. According to Web metrics vendor Net Applications, Firefox 3's share of the browser usage market nearly doubled in February over the previous month.
Mozilla has not committed to a release date for a final of Firefox 3, but based on earlier major upgrades, it's unlikely to unveil the finished product before April.

Microsoft Releases Silverlight 2, IE8 Betas

Moving forward with next-generation software in two critical realms, Microsoft released initial public beta versions of its Silverlight 2 multimedia presentation technology and the Internet Explorer 8 browser.
The company announced the releases at its Mix08 conference in Las Vegas.
Implemented as a plug-in, Silverlight is Microsoft's horse in the industry's race to provide the most eye-catching visual effects; it competes with Adobe's Flash Player and related technologies. Silverlight is cross-browser, cross-platform, and cross-device, Microsoft said.
Version 2 features support for managed code and developing with multiple languages, including IronRuby, IronPython, JavaScript, and .Net. The beta is available from Microsoft's Web site.
Internet Explorer 8, meanwhile, offers capabilities such as improved interoperability and full compliance with the Cascading Style Sheets 2.1 specification. That beta is available at Microsoft's official Internet Explorer 8 page.With Silverlight 2, Microsoft brought out a host of early adopters, including NBC Sports, which is using Silverlight for upcoming Olympics coverage; Hard Rock International, of Hard Rock Cafe fame; and Cirque du Soleil. Display capabilities both for the Web and mobile devices were highlighted.
NBC Sports plans to use Silverlight to Webcast 2,200 hours of coverage. "You're going to be able to go online and you're going to be able to consume video how you want it, when you want it," said Perkins Miller, senior vice president of NBC Sports and Olympics.
Hard Rock showed a Silverlight application enabling users to zoom in onto pictures of rock memorabilia, while Cirque du Soleil showed a performer-casting intranet application featuring video. In the mobile space, Weatherbug demonstrated a weather information application running on a Nokia phone.
Microsoft's Silverlight impressed Mix08 attendee Chris Pels, president of iDevTech, a consulting firm focused on Microsoft technologies. "I think it really takes the user experience to a different level and especially through the browser," Pels said.
"I was very interested in the mobile device aspect of it, too," he said. Microsoft Silverlight still must prove itself in the marketplace, Pels said.
Among the Silverlight innovations touted by Microsoft is "adaptive streaming," which gauges bandwidth capabilities on the client.
"Basically, it can automatically pick the appropriate bit rate and encoding to use," said Scott Guthrie, general manager in the Microsoft Developer Division. He had recently blogged about many of the capabilities cited at the event.Also featured in Silverlight 2 are SOAP and REST (Representational State Transfer) support and capabilities for cross-domain networks, for calling services on a network. Sockets-level programming for the client is enabled as well.
While the predecessor Silverlight 1 focused on video, Silverlight 2 has emphasized .Net development and transactional functions.
A rich UI framework in Silverlight 2 is based on Microsoft's Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF) technology. "What this gives you is a really rich way to use controls to build your sites," Guthrie said. Data binding, styling, and animation are enabled.
Silverlight has a default look and feel but also can be customized; beyond setting styles and colors, implementers can control templating capabilities and do custom state changes.
Silverlight developer tools include Microsoft's Visual Studio 2008 and Expression tools. These tools and XAML can be used to help position Silverlight as a platform for serving up display advertising. A preview of Visual Studio and Expression Blend capabilities for Silverlight are now shipping.
Microsoft announced a beta release of its Expression Studio 2 tool, featuring PHP (Hypertext Preprocessor) in the Expression Web tool and Silverlight support. The beta is accessible from the Microsoft Expression site.In conjunction with the Silverlight 2 beta, Microsoft is shipping via an open source license 2,000 unit tests that cover Silverlight.
Microsoft also plans to improve WPF later this year, offering more controls, streamlined setups, and improvements for startup performance and graphics.
With Internet Explorer 8, CSS 2.1 support will help developers and designers write pages once and have them render properly across different browsers, Microsoft said. A WebSlices capability enables users to mark parts of pages as WebSlices and monitor information. A Favorites bar displays WebSlices visuals.
New navigation features for AJAX (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML) also is featured in Internet Explorer 8, focused on the back/forward navigation stack and address bar. Enhanced protection from deceptive Web sites is featured, as are phishing filter enhancements.
Microsoft representatives did not have information on when Internet Explorer 8 or Silverlight 2 would be ready for general release.
Also announced at Mix08 was a preview of SQL Server Data Services, providing a building-block, on-demand service for developers and businesses seeking data storage.

Firefox reaches 500 million downloads

Firefox has been downloaded more then half a billion times! Good new for Mozilla of course. They are celebrating this by raising 500.000.000 grains of rice in one day (or so was the plan). Whether or not this plan succeeded, we don't know. But you can still help out! These grains of rice will go to the poor and hungry of the world and support the United Nations World Food Program. The good news is, everyone can participate (food 2.0 anyone?). And this offer doesn't count for just one day.

Just go to freerice.com and play the game. You have to click on the answer which defines the word shown best. Each time you give a good answer, 20 grains of rice are donated. At the same time, you are also improving your own knowledge of the English language! During the game, the difficulty increases if you give correct answers. Luckily for some of you, the difficulty goes down if you keep on giving wrong answers as well!

The Wonderful World of Pixel Art - Animated Gifs and Free Emoticons

The internet is a huge place. By its very nature it's home to an almost infinite amount of weird and wonderful interests and pursuits that most of us probably don't even now exist. With its sheer size and user-generated content, it's a place full of discovery that panders to every human whim, fancy, and interest. One of these is the wonderful, quirky, and often adorable world of pixel art.

Let's cover the basics: what is pixel art? Pixels are the tiny little squares used to make every image on your computer screen, and can be used to make tiny animations in .gif format. You can make these yourself in programmes like Corel Photo-Paint, or more specific programmes like Jasc's Animation Shop. Many, particularly younger people, will be familiar with some of the uses of pixel art. Emoticons, anikaos, and animated gifs are all examples of basic pixel art used on forums, MySpace, and Windows Live Messenger as a means of aiding expression in an essentially text-based form of communication, as well just simply for fun. Emoticons are perhaps the most widely used and searched for.

A range of emoticons come as standard with Live Messenger and most forums. These tend to be your basic set of emoticons to cover the main emotions and actions expressed while chatting. Many websites however offer more advanced and diverse emoticons in varying sizes and shapes, some even with sound. The latter tend to frequent more on pay-sites. There are though far more user-generated emoticons on the net, and are frequently exchanged between users of Messenger - which allows you to add and save emoticons used by others.

While emoticons are by far the most popular in the west, their eastern counterparts 'anikaos' (pronounced ani-cows, meaning literally 'animated faces' in Japanese) are becoming more and more popular as interest in Japanese popular culture continues to grow. Anikaos are typically floating spherical blobs bobbing up and down with a cute face depicting any number of emotions and actions. They tend to be used more on forums and are incredibly diverse, ranging from generic white blobs to household animals, peas, and characters from anything between Star Wars and Dragonball-Z. The user-generated nature of anikaos, like most pixel art, means their diversity and numbers continue to multiply.

Yet, beyond the world of communication-aiding emoticons and anikaos, the possibilities are even more varied. People can make literally anything they want in miniature using pixel art - and they do. People love to have things made tiny and love to use them on their websites, MySpace pages, and on Messenger.

A very popular form pixel art at the moment is animated gifs of Nintendo and Sega characters from the '80s and '90s such as Mario, Kirby, Link, and Sonic the Hedgehog recreated exactly from the 8-bit, 16-bit, and 32-bit games on which they appeared. The current craze for all things retro, especially in gaming, is certainly adding fuel to this. Particularly with girls, animated gifs of the characters Hello Kitty and Pucca Love are also extremely popular, and can be found on many a MySpace page. Hello Kitty and Pucca Love are very cute characters that are used frequently to personalise web pages and make them more attractive.

The fact that both Hello Kitty and Pucca Love have huge merchandising markets 'offline' easily explains their popularity in this respect. Likewise with both sexes, Pokemon animated gifs are extremely popular, particularly on MySpace and gaming sites. The cuteness of many Pokemon characters and the fact they are already computer game sprites makes them perfectly convertable into animated gifs.

But it doesn't end simply at branded corporate characters, oh no. There is a whole pixel art culture out there with people creating weird and wonderful designs of their own constantly. Witness blinking cheeseburgers, winking cake slices, a strange beige bob running towards you with a chefs for absolutely no reason at all! The possibilities are endless and quite frequently very, very strange. Very aptly, there seems to be a perfect miniature of the boundless lengths of human creativity contained within this little culture.

Mostly, gifs get passed around in networks fairly randomly, but if you're actively on the lookout, my advice would be to specifically refine your search. For example if you're specifically after gaming gifs, try punching in 'nintendo animated gifs' or 'super mario animated gifs'. Many sites with the best gifs don't even have domain names, so it pays to be patient. There are sites out there that endeavor to collect gifs together from around the net, but some are more organised than others and the quality varies from site to site.

A frequent problem is that they just won't be categorised, making your search difficult. If you find yourself falling in love with this kooky little world, then it doesn't even end here. Pixel art is not just animated gifs and emoticons - there are communities out there dedicated to making 'pixel art for pixel art's sake'. These people make incredibly high quality pictures and landscapes of such complexity that it takes your breath away. Pixel Joint is a great little community to get involved in if you find yourself going for this more advanced stuff, whether to appreciate or to create.
